About Jasmine & Biousing

June 18th, 2008

Hi, my name is Jasmine. I treat everyone who reads my blog as my close friend. I’d like to introduce me and my company—biousing—to you. To some extent, biousing is my daughter because I spent most of my passion and time, and of cause capital on her. You might ask me why I want to open such a company that produces high quality cell culture consumables. Am I so interested in being the first biology PhD to manufacture consumables? There’s a long story to tell.

This blog makes me recall the past. biousing is 1 year old now. One year ago, it was a hard time for me. I think I should introduce more about myself first.

I majored in biology in 1991 in Xi’an. My ambition was to be a teacher or a doctor when I was in primary school. This ambition lasted for 12 years until I was in senior school. As I was always a top student I was recommended to further my study in Shannxi Normal University without examinition. I liked biology. So I chose biology department without hesitation. I was fortunate that I chose my favorite subject. Then I passed the entrance examination of the 4th Military Medical University (FMMU) for my master’s degree. My intention was a little bit funny. I just wouldn’t teach in the senior school because they demanded staying at school for 8 hours. If I got my master’s degree, I would have taught in the university. Then I only needed to go to the university when I had class to teach. But the fact was that if you want to stay at university, you must strive to publish your papers, which will take up at least 12 hours at work. It’s a punishment because of my lazy intention. And things are getting worse because I am always thinking of having more time to relax. At that time, I thought being a boss I needn’t go to work everyday. Aha, now I don’t have time to sleep even if it’s Sunday! Then after my graduation, I was thinking about being a scientist. I was interested in research and didn’t feel tired to do experiments. So I went to the Academy of Military Medical Science (AMMS) to work there first, then I worked for professor Xuetao Pei, who is Director of the Beijing Institute of Transfusion Medicine and works on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. He is also Chief Scientist of 863 and 973 Programs in China. I learnt a lot from Prof. Pei, especially in how to be a person of integrity. Then I went to Shenyang Sunshine Pharmaceutical Co., LTD. to work in the Research Center, first as a PI, then as the director of the institute. I have learnt a lot in pharmaceutical research and management. And I got a chance to cooperate with a German company and went to Germany for a short time research. Sunshine is a high tech company with 10 years’ experiences in research and manufacture recombinant proteins such as EPO, TPO, IL-2 and INF. It is the first Chinese public biopharmaceutical company in NASDAQ.

All these gave me confidence to conquer the difficulties in the way to success. But success is far from what I imagined. After 3 years in Sunshine, I got a position to develop new biopharmaceuticals in another company. After all, sunshine is a mature company with a lot of experience and talents. My ambition is to set up my own kingdom of business, no matter how big it is. I wanted to play more roles in a company. So I went to this new company located in Hefei. But after I got there, I found that they didn’t have enough money and personnel to start this project. So it’s really a hard time to recall.

Now we return to the second paragraph. I must decide what to do next. I had 3 choices. One was to go back to Sunshine because they had already been a public company in NASDAQ and still needed me to be back. When I left sunshine, the chairman invited me to the best restaurant and he promised me stock options. But I gave up only for my ambition. There’s an old saying that a good horse doesn’t graze on the same pasture twice. Another choice was to go to another company to get a position. The third choice was to start my own business. I believe that my life is predetermined. I must go by myself. So I decided to start from the beginning—the very beginning you never thought it should be—to investigate what material they use to make cell culture plates. As an entrepreneur you need to be ready to conquer too many difficulties. You need to be dynamic to solve all kinds of problems. We have long time to tell more about my company.

Now one year later, we have successfully developed 16 products. My team is the best one in the world! Our products are tried in many countries and the feedbacks are positive. I know we need more time to enlarge the product line. But as it’s a young company, I feel satisfied with my team.
